Jacob Saul (He/Him)
I'm a filmmaker with a passion for writing, directing and editing, based in the South West of England. My diverse portfolio shows my ambition, range, technical knowledge and consistent quality I strive for in every project I am affiliated with; whether in a team leadership role or as a crew member. I am always eager to learn and adapt to new situations that may arise on a shoot or in the edit and my love for storytelling lends itself to fiction but also offers great transferable skills for other areas such as documentary, videography or advertising projects. I picked up lots of content creation skills when I was a co-host, editor and producer of 'The Sour Popcorn Podcast' a once weekly film podcast. Additionally, I have cultivated a growing online community and audience on YouTube which I am excited to expand and engage.

BA (Hons) Film (2018-2021) Plymouth College of Art I'm currently studying for my film degree and for this I have produced a mass amount of work that I am proud of. It's taught me a wide array of techniques and skills that I'll take forward into my artistic career as well as practise my craft on industry standard equipment. Most importantly it has introduced me to a group of artist that I collaborate with extremely well and will continue to do so even in the years following the completion of the degree. A-Levels (2016-2018) Newton Abbot College I studied Photography, Drama & Media Studies at A-Level which all have transferable skills when it comes to filmmaking and it's here where I truly started to grow as an artist. Photography - A - Studying photography not only made me fluent in my use of DSLRs but also allowed me to experiment with shooting on film and precious dark room experience. I found that even in stills photography, I would lean more into telling a narrative in each frame. This all helps me open a conversation with my cinematographers when working on projects. Drama - B - Having studied it at GCSE as well, drama was absolutely paramount to how I now collaborate with actors on set today. Not only in giving me my own experience to perform in many of my own and other people's shorts, but having the same language to truly pull the performance that's needed out of the actor. Media Studies - B - This not only helped me become fluent in video editing but also creating weekly video content to a deadline, as well as educate me on the media landscape we find ourselves in today which I find myself applying in my own work to subvert many conventions of certain genres. |

Notable work:
Sequence Cancelled - Writer/Director/Editor/Producer - A science-fiction horror short film funded by the Dartmouth Mayflower 400 Project. Filmed under COVID-19 restrictions, I successfully implemented precautions that kept everyone safe while also telling this twisted tale. (July - November 2020) NIGHT TERRORS - Writer/Director/Editor/Producer - of my own horror anthology series of six short films all made in one month. (October 2019) The Sunny Side of Pluto - D.I.T. Editor - I was a digital imaging technician on this short film production with a modest sized crew. I also took on responsibilities of a continuity editor which had me collaborating with the Director to help achieve their vision. (November '19 - January '20) Standstill (Pre-Production) - Writer/Director/Editor/Producer - This short film came about from me challenging myself as a writer to set a film entirely in a stationary car, yet still make it extremely tense. Drama/Thriller. (Late 2020) Points of View (Production) - Writer/Narrator/Occasional Illustrator - This is a collection of first-person short stories which I've narrated into Audiobooks and commissioned a handful of artists to illustrate accompanying images to each story and even illustrating one myself. (April - June 2020) 'Harvey Nichols Advert - The gift of giving' - Co-Director/Producer - I produced an advertisement that was shot on 16mm film with a great crew but after a technical mishap with the roll of film from a third party developer, I stepped up as the Director for the reshooted scene. This was for a national Kodak competition. (November '19 - February '20) |
